1979年7月索尼发布革命性的Walkman——世界第一部随身听产品TPS-L2，该产品采用金属外壳蓝色和银色，体积为88×133.5×29 mm的TPS-L2重量仅有330克，同时还配有立体声电路和立体声耳机MDR-3L2。而Walkman的概念也首次出现在人们的眼前。随后该随身听被出口到美国、欧洲等其它地区。

索尼表示，截止到2010年三月，他们已经在全球售出了4亿台随身听，其中200020000台是磁带式机型。在Walkman最开始的研发过程中，很多人包括索尼自己的员工都对这一产品的市场前景持怀疑态度，但是在两个月之后，所有人的疑虑都被一扫而空，Walkman变得非常流行，开始迅速的被广大年轻人所接受，而且成为了一种新文化的标志。

1979年！太牛逼了，我记得当时国内的胶性唱片还大行其道人家就随身听了。很怀念九几年用MD的时代，立体声可录可擦写很炫。:excellence

记得当年我中学的时候非常想要个MD, 在攒钱买个PS2还是MD之间举棋不定, 后来, 以极快的速度, MP3在中国普及了...
